Coconut products are flooding the market – first there was coconut water, now there's coconut milk, coconut milk yogurt, coconut kefir and coconut milk ice cream. This decadent nut used to be considered a major nutritional no-no but it now enjoys a serious health halo and is touted for weight loss benefits. Is this tropical treat really all it’s cracked up to be?

Helps Prevent Obesity by speeding up metabolism, providing an immediate source of energy with fewer calories than other fats. People who consistently use coconut products, report a stronger ability to go without eating for several hours with no affects of hypoglycemia.

Improves Heart Health by providing healthy short chain and medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) that are essential to good hcoconut budealth. Close to 98% of all fatty acids consumed are composed of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA), which are very different from MCFA that have no negative effect on cholesterol ratios and help to lower the risk of atherosclerosis and protect against heart disease. Studies have shown that populations in Polynesia and Sri Lanka, where coconuts are a dietary staple, do not suffer from high serum cholesterol or heart disease. Unlike other fats, the unique properties of coconut also contain a large amount of lauric acid, which is the predominant fatty acid found in mother's milk.

High in Dietary Fiber rivaling other fiber sources such as psyllium, wheat bran, oat bran, and rice bran. Coconut supplies an impressive 61% dietary fiber! Foods contain two types of carbohydrates - digestible and non-digestible. Digestible carbohydrates (soluble fiber) consists of starch and sugar and promote calories. Non-digestible carbohydrates (insoluble fiber) contains NO calories. Since the body cannot digest the dietary fiber in coconut, no calories are derived from it and it has no effect on blood sugar.

Low Glycemic Index (GI) measures how fast available carbohydrates in food raise blood sugar levels. Coconut fiber slows down the release of glucose, therefore requiring less insulin to utilize the glucose and transport it into the cell where it is converted into energy. Coconut also assists in relieving stress on the pancreas and enzyme systems of the body, in turn, reducing the risks associated with Diabetes.

I'm sure all the posts in this thread is created by bots but I just want to add that I avoid stalls that expressly state that they do not use coconut milk, ghee, butter or lard. I also shun stalls that state they use healthier oil (supported by the ill-informed Health Promotion Board) because invariably they all use processed vegetable oil. Sad but true, alot of hawkers now switch to vegetable oil like canola, corn etc under the mistaken notion that it is healthier when in fact it is not.

These processed oil increase inflammation in the body compared to natural (saturated) fats. The main reason they switch is economics, cost cutting and less work. Pure and simple. It is easier for a hawker to just buy cheap vegetable oil and use it straight out of the tin or bottle compared to having to render fat out from pork lard. For indian food sellers, it is much cheaper to use margarine in place of expensive ghee, yet ayurvedic and other ancient manuals have always mentioned ghee as a healing food.

The cheapest organic coconut oil is from Nature's Glory - Go to their building and buy .
There are two kinds, pure coconut oil and filtered to remove coconut aroma.
Theirs is very lage bottle for around $25 a bottle. The rest of the CO sold in singapore
is 4X- 6x more expensive.

Mustapha center also has coconut oil but it is packaged in a plastic bottle is is about
the same price as Nature's glory CO which is packaged in Glass.

Mustapha center also has the 'professionally packaged' co that senns for 3X the price
is a very small glass botle.

I found that my blood pressure was raised after using CO for a while. So measure your
vital signs when using these products. You could be killing yourself.

The coconut tree is a member of the family Arecaceae and the only species of the genus Cocos. The term coconut can refer to the whole coconut palm or the seed, or the fruit, which, botanically, is a drupe, not a nut
